In the past few years, hospitals have been asking for changes to the HCAHPS survey. In Q2 and Q3 of 2021, CMS will test some modifications hospitals have been asking for—primarily, web-based survey modes and to investigate potential new questions that are not currently included on the HCAHPS survey. Previously, CMS publicized that they were looking at testing three modes that incorporated web-based surveying:
- Email and mail
- Email and phone
- Email and mixed-mode (mail + phone)
CMS will soon start inviting nationally representative, randomly selected hospitals to participate in this mode experiment. Invited hospitals will also need to have enough HCAHPS eligible discharges to both meet normal HCAHPS surveying requirements and have additional, unsampled HCAHPS eligible discharges that can be used for this mode experiment.
If you are invited by CMS, PRC encourages you to participate in this valuable research, and we will provide whatever support is needed to transmit your patient records to CMS. PRC will continue to keep you informed as we learn more about potential changes coming to the HCAHPS survey.
