Excellent patient experiences and outcomes don’t just happen — they result from a carefully conceived and faithfully executed multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of care. That’s how Methodist Health System does it, anyway.
Based in Omaha, Nebraska, Methodist Health System engages three hospitals 21 health clinics, and a nursing and allied health college to ensure that the region’s residents always receive the care they need when and where they need it.
Methodist’s lung cancer screening program offers an exceptional case study of excellence in action. Established more than a decade ago, the program faced all of the challenges healthcare organizations nationwide confronted when the Affordable Care Act required providers to cover screenings for lung cancer for populations in the highest risk categories.
As a multi-hospital health system, Methodist opted to implement its program strategically, beginning in a single, centrally located hospital. Then, as processes were assessed and improved, the program expanded to the system’s other two hospitals, one in Nebraska and one in Iowa. Based on the structure established at the pilot site, staff at two additional facilities modified elements of the framework to enhance the patient experience at each location.
Starting with the structure decided to strategically implement our program in one hospital that was centrally located and then once successful, we expanded to our other hospitals across a state line. Although each facility started with the fundamental foundation of the original location, there were modifications to enhance the patient experience at each location.
An effective lung screening program enables healthcare organizations to impact population health, decrease costly spending on late stage cancer treatment, decrease the number of patients who are actively smoking, and increase the incidence of early stage lung cancer diagnoses.
