Mental Health Tips for Busy Practitioners – Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast

March 31, 2022

Our Healthcare Experience Foundation (HXF) partners are pleased to welcome back Nita A. Magee, PhD, RN, MHNP-BC, to the Healthcare Experience Matters podcast this week as we chat about mental health advice for busy practitioners.

This is a “must listen” podcast for anyone working in healthcare that finds themselves too busy taking care of other people to the point that they are not making enough time for themselves.

Dr. Magee first joined our podcast in January 2022 for a discussion about what it means to be a compassionate leader. You can listen to that episode here.

Dr. Magee is a mental health nurse practitioner. Since 2013 she’s been in a leadership role as a manager with the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery V.A. Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. With more than 30 total years of experience in healthcare, she has been with her medical institution for the last 26 years.

Today’s chat with Dr. Magee starts off with her reminding listeners about how compassionate leadership factors into the overall mental health discussion.

“I believe that showing compassion to other people is beneficial to our mental health,” she said.

As we learn on today’s show, compassionate actions such as being an active listener and giving other people our undivided attention can go a very long way.

Loyal listeners of this podcast may remember that Dr. Magee attended the Certificate in Foundations of Compassionate Leadership event and found it to be very beneficial. For those looking to explore more about compassionate leadership, the next webinar will take place on May 12 and 13, 2022, from 9am-1pm EST.

This event is presented by the Healthcare Experience Foundation (HXF) and the Maryland Healthcare Education Institute (MHEI). Learn more about it here.

As the conversation with Dr. Magee continues, she discusses her own personal habits of mindfulness.

For Dr. Magee, it is all about a great morning routine – free of television and news – to start the day off in the right frame of mind. She begins each morning with a prayer, some meditation, and deep breaths.

“Having that mindfulness gives me an opportunity to be more focused and it prepares me for what I need to do in that day,” she said.

Other simple mental health tips that Dr. Magee encourages listeners to do:

  • Keep a journal.
  • Turn off notifications. Turn down the volume.
  • Read.

“As a leader, it begins with me and me displaying those positive habits that I hope the staff picks up on,” she said.

We are grateful for Dr. Magee’s wisdom and for joining us to chat about another extremely important subject.
