Achieving Magnet® Recognition requires connecting the dots between data, culture and performance and driving change throughout the organization. In this webcast replay, Judy Boerger, MBA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Executive, and Vicki Maisonneuve, MSN, RN, CRRN, Manager, Nursing Center of Excellence, and Magnet® Program Director, explore how and why Parkview’s Magnet® Journey was rooted in excellence.
Mapping the milestones on Parkview’s Magnet® Journey
Excellence is a core value at Parkview Health, headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Parkview’s seven hospitals are among only 21 in the state of Indiana to attain Magnet® status. Nationwide, only 467 of more than 6,300 hospitals have achieved the standard of excellence signified by Magnet® certification.
Boerger and Maisonneuve note that Parkview’s shared governance structure was absolutely critical to the success of the organization’s Magnet® efforts. That organizational strength enabled the system-wide cultural transformation that fully engaged nursing leadership and Parkview’s nearly 3,000 clinical nurses.
During their presentation, Boerger and Maisonneuve map the milestones along Parkview’s journey to excellence, including:
- Marshaling leadership support
- Conducting performance assessments and gap analyses
- Leveraging shared governance
- Achieving outcomes
- Completing and submitting Magnet® documentation
- Managing the surveyor visit
In addition to describing the process, Boerger and Maisonneuve conduct a Q&A and offer takeaways from their Magnet® experience. “At Parkview, we don’t just talk about compassionate and expert care, we define it through every interaction,” says Boerger. “We empower our nursing teams to do what is best for patients, we inspire one another to grow personally and professionally, and – most importantly – we put patients and their families at the center of everything we do.”
